Soldier of Fortune II usually crashes at start-up on modern PCs because its 2002 graphics code can’t handle the very long list of features (OpenGL “extensions”) today’s graphics drivers report. The fix is the free 1fx. client patch: install it and start the game with SoF2MP.1fxmaster.exe. If it still crashes, reset the video settings or remove a broken config, as explained below.
Why it crashes
When the game starts, it asks the graphics driver which OpenGL features it supports and copies the answer into a fixed-size space in memory. Drivers in 2002 returned a short list. Modern drivers return a list far longer than the space SoF2 reserved, and the game crashes before the menu appears. This is the “GL_EXTENSIONS” crash, shared by many games of the same age.
The fix
- Download the 1fx. client patch that matches your version (v1.03 for GOG and Gold, v1.00 for the original discs). The Play page links both.
- Extract it into your SoF2 folder, the one containing
SoF2MP.exe, and let it replace the existing file. - Start the game with
SoF2MP.1fxmaster.exe. Make a desktop shortcut to it so you always use the right one.
Still crashing? Try these
Reset the video settings
A resolution your screen doesn’t support can crash the game every time it starts. Add +set r_mode 4 +set r_fullscreen 0 to the end of the shortcut’s Target box to start in an 800×600 window, then set your resolution again from the console. See the widescreen guide.
Remove a broken config
Your settings live in sof2mp.cfg in the base folder (and in each mod’s folder). Rename it to sof2mp.cfg.old and start the game. It will create a fresh one with default settings. If that fixes it, copy your binds and name across from the old file.
Remove recently added files
A damaged or incompatible .pk3 in base can stop the game loading. Move anything you added recently out of the folder and try again.
Check the compatibility settings
If you set compatibility mode while trying old fixes, turn it off again, then try Disable fullscreen optimisations on its own. More in SoF2 on Windows 10 and 11.
Update your graphics driver
Very old drivers on laptops with two graphics chips can pick the weak chip. In the NVIDIA or AMD control panel, set SoF2MP.1fxmaster.exe to use the high-performance graphics card.
Crashes when joining a server
Crashing while connecting, rather than at start-up, is usually a missing or mismatched map or mod. Check you have the server’s maps (installing maps) and the right mod version (which mod).
Frequently asked questions
Why does SoF2 crash on start-up?
Modern graphics drivers report a list of OpenGL extensions longer than the 2002 game can store. The 1fx. client patch fixes it.
Does the GOG version still need the patch?
For multiplayer, yes. The 1fx. patch also restores the server list, which GOG’s copy doesn’t.
Is r_allowExtensions 0 a fix?
It can stop the crash, but it turns off features the game relies on and makes it run very slowly. Use the patch instead. About r_allowExtensions.
